Moderation Management (MM) is a self help group that is focused on helping people learn to control their drinking. According to MM’s own statistics about 1/3 of it’s members are able to control themselves, about 1/3 just stop coming to meetings, and about 1/3 decide that abstinence is better for them. Frequently, the people who have chosen abstinence will stay with MM because they find it more open and accepting than AA. AA seems to be the standard by which people judge abstinence based alcohol treatment. Using AA as a benchmark is probably fair because there are more AA meetings out there than all the other alcohol addiction programs put together. MM also has online groups and a chat room. So if finding a meeting that is close by is a problem, this might be a solution.
